Man charged in connection to a hate-motivated incident

The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) says a man has been charged in connection with a hate-motivated incident that occurred over the weekend.

The EPS officers were dispatched to a disturbance near 110 Street and 153 Avenue on Oct. 15.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man who was “acting aggressively, yelling racial slurs and uttering threats directed at the Muslim community.”

Officers attempted to take him into custody, but the man resisted. EPS says the officers were eventually able to place him in custody with no injuries to the man or the officers.

Since being placed in custody, the 50-year-old man has been charged with mischief, uttering threats, and resisting arrest.

Police are also recommending Section 718.2 of the Criminal Code of Canada be applied in this case, which would allow the courts to consider increased sentencing when there is evidence the offense was motivated by hatred.
