Premier Smith, UCP MLAs sworn into office Tuesday

By News Staff

Alberta’s ruling part was sworn in Tuesday, a day after official Opposition members took their oath.

Forty-eight United Conservative Party MLAs swore and affirmed their oath in the legislative assembly in front of Lt.-Gov. Salma Lakhani.

Friends and family were also in attendance for the ceremony.

“I am honoured to be part of such a talented, hardworking team and am excited to get back to work,” Premier Smith tweeted after the ceremony.

The UCP returns a smaller majority to chambers, down from 63 elected members in 2019.

Alberta NDP Leader Rachel Notley and her 35 MLAs were sworn in Monday – the largest caucus for a provincial runner-up.

MLAs are slated to return to the legislature Oct. 30 for the throne speech.
