Truck carrying excavator drove into Whitemud overpass, causing structural damage

A bridge into Edmonton is closed after being struck by a semi truck carrying a large load.

Traffic delays are expected for the foreseeable future on the southeast end of Whitemud Drive near the Anthony Henday.

A driver of a semi-truck carrying an excavator drove into the Whitemud overpass, shutting down traffic flow. Police are advising drivers to find another route.

Edmonton police say the driver of the semi-truck was not injured in the collision with the bridge.

The overpass is closed because of structural damage currently being evaluated by engineers. That process could last throughout the weekend.

Both directions of travel on the Henday are uninterrupted.

All exit ramps onto Whitemud drive are closed, except the southbound exit heading west into the city.

Barricades are redirecting traffic away from the overpass until the assessment is complete.
