Alberta Health Services’ Mauro Chies given permanent role

Mauro Chies is officially CEO and president of Alberta Health Services (AHS) after serving in those roles on an interim basis.

AHS administrator Dr. John Cowell made the announcement Monday, saying the decision was made with “others,” along with support from an international executive search firm.

Chies was appointed the interim leader in April 2022 after former CEO Verna Yiu was fired with 14 months left in her contract.

Cowell says he is “delighted” that Chies, who has worked with AHS since 2009, accepted the permanent role.

“Having worked closely with him these past few months, I know we have a shared vision and focus on the major improvements to our healthcare system that make the most significant difference to the people of Alberta,” Cowell said in a statement.

Chies previously chaired the board of Alberta Precision Laboratories, which is facing long wait times after the government privatized it in December 2022.

“I am extremely pleased to be given the opportunity to continue to serve in the capacity of President and CEO at AHS,” Chies’ statement reads.

“It is a source of pride and a great privilege to work alongside Dr. Cowell and the Advisory Board, our dedicated executive leadership team and our incredible staff, physicians, and volunteers, all of whom are committed to providing exceptional healthcare to the people of this province.”
