By CityNews Staff

Mikisew Cree First Nation is calling on the government and industry to take immediate action following the spill near Imperial Oil’s Kearl Lake site.

That includes an independent review of the Alberta Energy Reguator’s oversight on tailings ponds.

Mikisew officials say they weren’t warned about the severity of the spill – which would have prompted them to take safety steps when it came to hunting or drinking water.

The Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation also raised concerns about the spill on Thursday.

The AER says an environmental protection order was issued to Imperial Oil earlier this month.

The company says it has taken mitigation steps and has not seen any impacts to wildlife or waterways
