Council debates quadrupling fines to $1,000 for excessively noisy drivers

The City of Edmonton may try and quiet noisy vehicles by boosting fines in a big way.

Penalties for loud drivers currently top out at $250 under provincial rules.

However, council will debate raising it to $1,000 on Wednesday.

Fines could also double for each infraction.

The noise bylaw currently sets the standard at 92 decibels – but only for motorcycles.

The city says it received just over 1,000 noise vehicles complaints in 2021.
