The friend of an Edmonton woman, diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer spoke to media Friday, saying since the diagnonis in December, nothing has happened because of wait times and backlogs.

Loris Harsh speaking on behalf of her friend Debra Williams, too sick to be there in person.

“It’s been nearly three months since Deb’s initial diagnosis of cancer and Deb is still waiting to see an oncologist. Until Deb has an appointment at the cross and is assigned an oncologist, absolutely nothing happens for Debs treatment.”

The opposition Alberta NDP highlighting Williams’ story Friday, saying the province’s relationship with doctors and the healthcare system have caused massive backlogs for medical treatment. Alberta Health Services, telling me that while they’re sympathies are with the woman, clarifying by saying physicians from AHS have been in touch with the woman since her diagnosis.

“When a patient is considered palliative, care and treatment is focused on symptom management and ensuring the patient is as comfortable as possible. It would be unusual for a patient who is considered palliative to be seen by an oncologist following their diagnosis.”

AHS adding, the wait time is normally six to eight weeks to see a specialist for that specific type of cancer.

CityNews reached out health ministry for comment, but they have yet to respond.
