Study indicates people with Botox need more injections after receiving COVID vaccine

A study shows a link between Covid vaccines and Botox efficacy. But as Bianca Millions reports, dermatologist Dr. Zaki Taher says the study has some flaws.

A study published by a group of researchers in Israel shows a link between COVID-19 mRNA vaccinations and the efficacy of Botox.

In the study, a group of 45 people who had botulinum toxin type A injections prior to the Pfizer vaccine, were followed after two doses of the COVID vaccine.

The findings were consistent with all participants – the neuromodulators were lasting less time, resulting in a need for more frequent injections.

“Now that we’re out of the throws of the pandemic, and we’re observing patients well past now, the little concerns that we may have had about a decreased duration of effect is dissipated,” said Dr. Zaki Taher, a board-certified dermatologist.

In Canada, botulinum toxin type A is available in four different forms; the most popular being Botox, along with Dysport, Xeomin, and Nuceiva.

Dr. Taher notes a few flaws in the study, saying the control group of 45 people is very small. Additionally, the study focused only on those with the COVID vaccine but says there could be data to be found among those who had the COVID-19 virus as well.

“One of the confounding issues is the virus itself, whether it in itself can affect our own immunity, and whether that might have something to do with the response to therapy. Part two, we know a vaccine, especially these unique mRNA vaccines, could also have a similar effect. So the answer is, all the more data gives us all the more confidence that we are observing something real.”

The study concluded with a need for further research, there are no answers yet as to why the COVID vaccine could have caused an issue with Botox, but in his professional opinion, there isn’t a reason to worry.

“Stay confident, be happy, be positive. It looks like everything is just fine.”
