As single-use plastics vanish, how will restaurants have to adapt their takeout?

In today’s Big Story podcast, this year marks the beginning of a delayed phase-out of single-use plastics, mandated by Canada’s federal government. As the rules change over the coming months, restaurants are trying to figure out what to do — with plastic cutlery, plastic bags and most importantly with the takeout containers themselves.
Rosa Saba is a business reporter with The Canadian Press, she joins us to break down the new regulations, and share some of the feedback she’s heard from Canadian restaurateurs while reporting on this story.
“Those independent businesses, which also might be the ones struggling the most financially, they might have a harder time both sourcing something that works for them, and finding something that is cost effective,” she said.
So what will this mean for the future of takeout? Can restaurants afford it? And will any of this really make a difference to the glut of plastic clogging the planet?
