Holiday shoppers in Edmonton were stunned when part of the parking lot ceiling suddenly collapsed Wednesday evening.

It was a shocking scene for holiday shoppers Wednesday evening.

As some mall-goers went to return to their cars, they discovered a portion of a parkade ceiling collapsed at West Edmonton Mall.

Crews blocked off a section on the west end of the parkade, in a section on the main floor near the Scotiabank theatre, but traffic hadn’t been completely shut down, and drivers in the area were still able to get to access vehicles.

As of Wednesday night, there was no word on any injuries or the extent of damage to the roof or customer vehicles.

In a statement to CityNews regarding the ceiling, a spokesperson for West Edmonton Mall said, “With the extreme cold weather, a water leak occurred causing freezing and cosmetic damage to the stucco parkade façade.”

They added, “there is no structural damage to the parkade. The impacted area will be cleaned and back to normal shortly. West Edmonton Mall is open for business as usual.”
