As the 2022 FIFA World Cup approaches, Team Canada soccer fans are preparing to travel to Qatar to support the team. CityNews’ Bailey Nitti also speaks to the brother of a Canada player about what it means to watch a loved one play at this level.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup is just around the corner and Team Canada fans who’ve booked their ticket to watch those matches live are now preparing for their travel across the world to Qatar.

“We’ve been joking saying this is going to be nice, it’s the first time we go to a Canada game and we’re able to wear shorts,” said Shawn Mann, a Team Canada supporter.

“I’m going to three Canada matches and then seven other games. We’re there for ten nights so ten games in ten nights. It’s going to be insane.”

Mann has been a Team Canada soccer supporter since 1993 when he watched his first-ever match and he’s been hooked ever since and says this opportunity is one he would never miss.

“I told my wife early on in our relationship if Canada qualifies and the world cup was on the moon that I would be there so we made it happen,” he explained.

And another Team Canada supporter headed to Qatar not only to watch the team live but also to support a family member.

“My whole family is going. My sister and I fly out Monday, parents are coming right after so all the immediate family will be there and it’s my brother right so what a dope moment,” said Elijah Adekugbe, a defender for Cavalry FC and is also the brother of Team Canada left-back Sam Adekugbe.

Adekugbe says this is a moment his brother has been working his entire life for and to see him play live for Team Canada will be surreal.

“It’s a dream you never thought could come true that’s happening so. My sisters will for sure be crying so I’ll see what that brings to me.”

As for fans planning to watch World Cup action from a local pub or the comfort of their own home, repping red and white is a must. One soccer store is warning fans to grab Canada merch while you can.

“We just got topped up last week and the way we’re selling it in the last few days. It’s unreal,” Samara Smith, the store manager of EuroSport Soccer store told CityNews. “Hopefully we have enough that it will last through the World Cup.”

As for the most sought out jerseys, Smith says “probably the Davies jersey. Every second person wants Davies and we’ve sold hundreds over the past year.”

Canada’s first match is set for November 23 against Belgium.
