UPDATE: Edmonton police said the intersection was reopened just before 10 p.m.

Edmonton police say two people are dead after a crash in the city’s southeast involved several vehicles Wednesday.

Officers say five vehicles were involved near the intersection of 50 Street and 34 Avenue. One of those vehicles appeared to be a taxi.

“Upon arrival, EPS members found two motorists deceased on scene and five vehicles disabled from the collision,” said Edmonton police in a statement.

Police believe a Toyota Camry was travelling east on 34 Avenue when it ran a red light and hit a Dodge Caravan Minivan travelling southbound.

The Camry continued through the intersection, where EPS say it hit a Toyota Prius, forcing it into a Toyota Rav 4, which then hit a Ford F-150. All three vehicles stopped in lanes beside each other.

The driver of the Camry, a 90-year-old woman and the driver of the Dodge minivan, a 56-year-old man were both pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Prius was taken to hospital for precautionary reasons.

Police have asked motorists to avoid the area and have stated an investigation is ongoing.
