Love conquers all, even the bitter rivalry between Edmonton and Calgary.
One couple proved just that during the Battle of Alberta when a Flames fan got down on one knee to propose to his partner who was cheering on the Oilers.
“I was freaking out, I couldn’t believe it, oh my god,” says Tessa Monias who had no idea about her fiancé’s plan.
“I was shaking because I made sure and planned to do it when Edmonton scored because I knew she would be standing and not paying attention to me. That’s when I’ll bend the knee and next thing you know it, 21 seconds in and I’m like ‘I’m going to have to do this already,’” says Payden Partaker who got down on one knee while wearing his Calgary Flames Jersey while in Oilers territory.
Art Raham, a camera operator for Sportsnet captured the entire proposal on video.
“Most times when I’m there, I’ll warn people that they will be on TV at some point during a goal. When I had talked to this particular gentleman, he said ‘yes that’s fine!’ then he leaned in and said “I’m going to propose to her.’ And I said ‘Oh! Alright,’ so I go back to my position and wouldn’t you know it, 20 seconds into the game he’s down on one knee and I’m shooting it and here we are,” he says.
It’s a classic Canadian love story that’s putting a smile on Edmontonians’ faces. “Oh, he’s proposing? Oh my gosh, that is so cute!” said one woman who reacted to the proposal.
Another person said, “honestly I think that is beautiful because there is a lot of enemy territory around him yet he had the courage to do it and she said yes.”
Albertans know how to have some rivalry fun when it comes to the Battle of Alberta, but this couple isn’t letting it get in the way of love, both cheering on the same team as their late fathers, who both recently passed.
“We probably brought them to tears, even though they aren’t here, I bet they are so happy and so honoured for how we did it,” says Payden, adding he asked Monia’s father for his blessing and hand in marriage before he passed away.
“Her dad just passed away recently, and I knew he was passing, so before he did I asked him if I can take his girl’s hand in marriage, and asked if I can have his blessing, and he was so happy and excited, and I said I will wait, I will let them mourn you because I know how hard it is, but if you give me a sign, I will take it and go through with it, I just need you to give me a sign. We got tickets for free basically, and I just knew I had to make it happen on game day.”
As for which team their three-year-old daughter cheers on, Partaker says “She’s literally our battle of Alberta, that’s what we call her, our half and half.”
Despite the Flames losing the game, Both Partaker and Monias walked away winners.
