Ben Stelter to Connor McDavid after Oilers loss: ‘You’ve got this buddy’

With the Edmonton Oilers on the brink of elimination in the Stanley Cup playoffs, the team will need to dig deep to win their next two games.

They’re not out yet, says Ben Stelter.

The young five-year-old Oilers fan who is battling brain cancer recently became an icon of sorts for Edmonton.

Ben captured the hearts of hockey fans, gives the players fist bumps before they hit the ice, and was even featured on an Upper Deck hockey card.

And he shared words of encouragement with Oilers superstar Connor McDavid after the team’s 4-0 loss to the L.A. Kings Sunday in Game 4.

The boy’s grandfather Ron Lawrence shared a photo of McDavid hugging Ben after the game.

“You’ve got this buddy,” Ben apparently told the Oilers captain.

Ben and his family were in California.

Edmonton went on to lose Game 5 in overtime 5-4 at Rogers Place Tuesday but showed a more fighting spirit, clawing back from a third-period deficit to force the extra period.

McDavid had a three-point night – one goal and two assists.

Edmonton is down 3-2 in the best-of-seven series.

The Oilers will need to turn Ben’s words into results if they hope to keep their playoff journey alive.

Game 5 is Thursday in Los Angeles.
