Edmonton resumes snow clearing, snow piles leave some upset

After weeks of pausing snow clearing due to the extreme cold, city crews are back at work. Although the roads are being cleared down to the bare pavement as part of a new pilot program, they’re leaving behind windrows of snow and ice.
The city says crews have completed almost half of Edmonton’s residential neighbourhoods. But some people say they’re not happy with the mess left behind.
After their driveway was blocked by a snow pile, one person posted a photo to Reddit saying, “City of Edmonton announces latest lockdown measures: project don’t leave your house.”
Another Reddit user responded, “was about to go somewhere, then these guys came and formed the Berlin Wall in front of my driveway and had to wait two hours for them to clear it.” But those high windrows may have put a temporary stop to travel.
CityNews drove around various neighbourhoods in Edmonton and although there are windrows over 5 feet in some areas, all driveways have been cleared.
The city says they will clear windrows blocking driveways, walkways and fire hydrants within a few hours.
“We do not remove windrows from curbside in residential areas and we will work to help ensure safety and mobility for all Edmontonians,” said Andrew Grant, general supervisor of infrastructure field operations with Edmonton parks and roads services.
If windrows are causing a safety concern, you’re asked to report it to 311.
