Alberta’s top doctor says COVID-19 not cause of teen’s death

Update Thursday, Oct. 14, 2021:
Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Deena Hinshaw has removed the 14-year-old from the Tuesday’s list of COVID-related deaths. Hinshaw says the initial report included COVID-19 as a secondary cause, but “additional information” indicates the novel coronavirus was not the cause of death.

CALGARY — As Albertans celebrated Thanksgiving across the province this past weekend, Alberta reported it’s youngest COVID-related death to date.
Among the 33 new deaths reported over the weekend was a 14-year old who had “complex, pre-existing medical conditions.”
Dr. Deena Hinshaw says the pre-existing conditions played a significant role in the teen’s death.
As for the other 32 reported deaths, they ranged from a person in their 30s, up to a pair of Albertans in their 90s.
To date, 2,863 people have died from COVID-19 in Alberta.
Over the weekend, the province reported 3,358 new cases of COVID-19.
The case breakdown for the long weekend is as follows:
- 1,085 new cases reported on Friday
- 1,039 new cases reported on Saturday
- 628 new cases reported on Sunday
- 606 new cases reported on Monday
There are now more than 15,000 active cases of COVID-19 in Alberta.

As of Tuesday, there are now 1,053 people in hospital with COVID-19, 242 of which are in the ICU.
On the vaccination front, more than 6.23 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Alberta.
Of those 12 and older in the province, 85.3 per cent have received at least one dose of vaccine, while 76 per cent are now fully immunized.
