EDMONTON – Alberta’s police watchdog is investigating after two Edmonton police officers shot and killed an armed suspect last week.
Around 4 p.m. Friday, Edmonton Police Service (EPS) was called to an alleyway behind the Eastglen Motor Inn on 118 Avenue and 69 Street for reports of an armed man nearby.
The suspect made his way into the backyard of a nearby house.
Multiple officers and the tactical team responded to the area, with some officers heading to the front of the house and others heading to the back.
Officers behind the house found the 48-year-old man and got into what the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) describes only as a “confrontation”.
That’s when the two officers fired at the man, ultimately killing him.
Police say a 12-gauge semi-automatic shotgun with a single round was found nearby and nine additional loose shotgun shells and a fully loaded magazine with five rounds were found in the man’s pockets.
The suspect had three court-ordered lifetime bans on having guns or ammunition.
ASIRT’s investigation is ongoing and the watchdog says no other information will be released at this time.
