Drivers Examiners Association suing Alberta Government

EDMONTON (660 NEWS) – A group representing Alberta’s driver examiners is now suing the provincial government.

The Certified Drivers Examiners Association (CDEA) along with nine former private employees have filed a lawsuit against the government alleging a breach of their constitutional rights.

The lawsuit comes less than two months after the NDP government officially took over the road test system after over 25 years of privatization.

The association wanted to discuss the issue of financial compensation for driver examiners, alleging the government was eliminating the driver examination industry and many of the examiners’ businesses.

The CDEA says that the NDP Government did not engage in any settlement discussions.

“It was never our intention to sue the Government, but given the fact that the Government did not want to discuss a settlement for the loss of our livelihoods, we have been left with no other option,” said Olga Kalmring, a plaintiff in the case and executive with the CDEA.

Kalmring says that as the matter is before the courts, she can’t provide further comment on the lawsuit.

Earlier this week, the Association expressed concerns over the new government system, saying wait times for road tests were as long as three weeks.
