Man saved in QE-II Highway heroics

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Two people are being hailed as heroes after they pulled a man from a rolled vehicle in a metre of water on the side of the QE-II between Calgary and Airdrie last Wednesday afternoon.
Cheryl Cook says a passerby named Shawn who stopped and a nurse who he managed to flag down is the reason her husband Darrell is alive and is expected to make a full recovery.
It all happened after Darrell’s vehicle left the northbound lanes, crossed the median, three lanes of southbound traffic and rolled into a ditch.
“A gentleman named Shawn, stopped the vehicle, got out and debated if he should pull him out or not because if there is a neck injury that could make it worse…but he knew that if he didn’t pull him out he would be for sure dead,” said Cheryl.
“So he pulled him out and flagged down a vehicle and the driver happened to be a registered nurse.”
To top it off, Cheryl says Shawn sent her husband a get-well card in the hospital.
Hero Shawn said he noticed the vehicle flipped in the ditch and pulled over to call police.
“I just barely see tires over the hill sticking up so I knew the vehicle was upside down so I called 911 as I jumped out and I rushed over there and I saw the vehicle was in water and I said ‘someone’s in there right.’ Everyone was like ‘yeah, but it’s in the water.’ I threw down my phone, I didn’t even care about 911 anymore.”
“When I got him out, he was not breathing and was completely purple. I managed to get him over to the edge and lift him up as high as I could and some other people grabbed him and brought him up and by the time I got up there, they already were performing CPR.”
While many are hailing Shawn and the nurse as heroes, he doesn’t see it that way.
“I don’t really consider anything anyone did out there a hero. You give food to the food bank to help out others, you help a lady across the street, you hold doors open for people, even just saying thank you for something that’s what people do everyday. I’m not out of the norm of what I did.”
Cheryl says they are looking to connect with Shawn and the nurse so they can thank them in person.
