Election signs defaced in two Calgary ridings

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – An election sign in the riding of Calgary-Edgemont has been defiled with racist graffiti.
The sign belongs to the campaign of Alberta Party candidate Joanne Gui, who is of Asian descent.
“In this day and age, this kind of thing is still happening,” Gui said Thursday in front of the sign. “It’s shocking.
“At first, I thought, ‘I can handle it,’ then when my friends called me, I got emotional, and I cried.”
“I thought politics can be dirty, but never racism against me being a minority woman to participate in the Canadian democracy,” she explained.

Making matters worse, the sign was placed near an elementary school on the International Day to End Racism.
The defacing has already been condemned by Gui colleagues in the Alberta Party as well as UCP leader Jason Kenney and NDP leader Rachel Notley.
On the same day, another sign in the riding of Calgary-Bow was defaced, this one belonging to NDP candidate Deborah Drever.
Drever posted the sign on her Twitter page after someone wrote the words “Death to Marxists”.
