Alberta environmental group showing support for carbon tax

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – An environmental group in Alberta claims the carbon tax has been successful in the province.

The report said many key economic indicators have improved since the levy was introduced in 2017.

Joshua Buck with Environmental Defence said the doom and gloom about the carbon tax killing jobs in this province simply didn’t come to fruition.

“We led the country in growth and we’ve added tens of thousands of jobs. We found that you can take meaningful climate action without sacrificing the promise of the economy” said Buck.

He believes it’s too early to see the full positive effects of the levy on the environment, but some of the programs being funded by the tax are a good start.

Ric Mciver with the United Conservative Party casts doubt on the environmental group’s claims.

“They will grasp at any piece of information to support this tax that is disliked by two-thirds of Albertans, has been since the beginning, and one that doesn’t do anything for the environment,” said Mciver.

He added the carbon tax has made everything Albertans do more expensive.
