First of two Sherwood Park explosions intentional: RCMP

SHERWOOD PARK (CITYNEWS) – New details are coming to light after a pair of explosions this week in the Sherwood Park area.
Police say the first of Tuesday’s explosions, which happened in the lower level of the parkade of Strathcona Community Centre, was intentionally set off. The second blast was caused by a gas tank that caught fire on a nearby vehicle.
They also believe the sole suspect–Kane Kosolowsky, 21— went to his car following the first explosion and then suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound, later dying in hospital.
RCMP say more testing will need to be done to determine what exactly the explosive devices were made up of.
Investigators believe Kosolowsky acted alone and they are not looking for any other suspects. They still don’t know the motive for the first explosion being set off, but police don’t believe Kosolowsky was connected to any radical ideologies or groups.

Several firearms were seized from the suspect’s vehicle. The Kosolowsky family has cooperated fully in the RCMP investigation.
After searching the community centre and surrounding area police say they haven’t found any other explosives and it’s safe for people to return to the complex. Mayor of Sherwood Park Rod Frank, though, says the community centre likely won’t be opened until next week.
