4 dead, 4 hurt following wrong-way crash in Calgary

Four people are dead, and four others are hurt following a wrong-way crash that set vehicles ablaze late Sunday night on Stoney Trail in southwest Calgary.
Calgary police say among the dead are a child and a woman who were travelling in the same vehicle.
Authorities say they were called to the three-vehicle collision on the northbound lanes of Stoney Trail NW near the Tsuut’ina Parkway exit shortly before 11 p.m.
CPS says they believe a 2011 Mercedes Benz C350, driven by a 30-year-old man, was travelling southbound in the northbound lanes of Stoney Trail where it struck an oncoming 2016 Subaru Impreza, and both vehicles caught fire.
A Chevrolet Equinox operated by a 52-year-old woman then struck the Mercedes Benz.
Police say the crash resulted in the deaths on scene of the Mercedes’ driver and a pair of passengers, a woman and a child.
The driver of the Subaru, the sole occupant, was also pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver and three youth passengers of the Chevrolet were transported to hospital, one suffering from life-altering, non-life-threatening injuries.
Upon arrival, firefighters encountered two of the three vehicles fully engulfed in flames.
“Crews immediately initiated an aggressive fire attack while simultaneously conducting rapid searches of the involved vehicles and providing emergency care to those who could be reached,” the fire department states in a news release.
“Despite the rapid actions of first responders, four people were pronounced deceased at the scene. Four additional patients were transported to hospital by EHS for further assessment and treatment.”
Calgary Police are investigating the crash and say “impairment and excessive speed on behalf of the driver of the Mercedes Benz are being investigated as factors in the collision.”
