Summer storms have done at least $20M in damages: Edmonton city manager

This summer’s storms have already done millions of dollars in damages – and that’s without including the three storms from the past week.
The cost of Edmonton’s summer storms is estimated at $20-$30 million, according to the City of Edmonton’s city manager.
But Eddie Robar says that doesn’t even include the last three storms: from Saturday, Monday and Tuesday.
While Robar says the storms have resulted in “widespread operational impacts and closures,” he adds the costs won’t have an impact on the tax rate thanks to the city’s “financial stabilization reserve.”
The City of Edmonton has applied for assistance from the province’s hazard assistance and resilience program (HARP) “to recover expenses incurred as a result of the significant rainfall in June.”
The city is in the process of assessing the impacts from this month’s storms; additional HARP applications will be submitted by the end of August.
“Our crews are working hard to clean things up, and they’ve been doing a great job. I also want to thank Edmontonians for their patience and help with steering clear of hazards and giving us room to work,” Robar told CityNews in an email.
Edmonton has already been hammered by six major weather events since June. The latest – Saturday’s and Monday’s – led to flooding, road closures, outages, submerged vehicles and downed trees.
More storms are forecast for the coming weeks in what has become the wettest summer on record for Edmonton.
