From old CDs, retro consoles to a Yoda popcorn holder, one never knows what they can find at a garage sale.
That’s a thrill Matthew Peace, co-creator of YardQuest, likes to chase.
“We’re huge garage sellers and thrifters,” Peace said.
But looking for garage sales around the city can be time-consuming and challenging — following signs, missing the turn, and losing the trail.
“We really just wanted a way to make it easier for everyone to locate garage sales and then to have their garage sales found,” Peace said.
That’s why Peace and his co-creator came up YardQuest, a website to help Edmontonian find garage sales easier.
When a user types in a location into the YardQuest website, they can see a list of garage sales within five to 20 kilometres. It also has a built-in map that can provide directions to sales.

“We have something like 400 garage sales posted just today, and it’s just we’re hopping from one to the other,” Peace said.
With the website supporting navigation for the exact location of the sale, garage sale signs might be redundant.
“Signage isn’t as important, right? And if it’s on Google Maps and it’s in your car, then of course you’re not distracted driving,” says Jason Braaksma, a garage sale host. “So, if it’s telling you where exactly to go, I think that’s a proper thing to do.”
Braaksma says the website is useful to him not only as a host, but also as someone who likes buying items from other garage sales.
“If I was going around that day and doing that kind of stuff, definitely I would use that,” Braaksma said.
Information such as what items are being sold and the location will be shown during the sale. But the address will be hidden before and after its opening hours.
“We do care a lot about people’s security and their own privacy,” Peace said.
As Peace improve the website for Edmontonians, he would also like to take YardQuest to other cities.
