Edmonton opera singer celebrates Grammy nomination

An Edmonton opera singer and U of A lecturer has been nominated for a Grammy. Our Leo Cruzat has more with her reaction and what’s next for her opera journey.

From the University of Alberta to the Grammys — an Edmonton opera singer and U of A lecturer says she was surprised to learn she was nominated for the best opera recording in the 2026 Grammy Awards.

Miriam Khalil is used to being recognized for her operatic soprano as she’s received a Juno nomination, but now, her work is being recognized internationally.

She’s nominated for her work in the opera adaptation of the Canadian film “Adoration“.

She is the only Canadian in the ensemble of six and is proud to represent the maple leaf.

“The Junos are a really big deal, but you know, you always feel like I’m Canadian, so this is really exciting. But to be kind of nominated in a pool that is not necessarily our own. You know what I mean. Always feels a little bit like you know a fish out of water,” said Khalil.

“There’s only six of us in the cast, whereas others … we are up against the Metropolitan Opera, you know, like so these really big mammoth companies … so it was very exciting to sort of be put in that sort of same category.”

Khalil caught up with CityNews on Friday on her way to Los Angeles for the awards.

She is thrilled by the recognition and hopes it will influence more people to explore a career in the arts and opera.

“You carry on, and you hope that this type of work has changed me, and can influence other people as well through my work,” said Khalil.

The 2026 Grammy Awards will be broadcast on CityTV and CityTV Plus on Sunday.
