47-year-old Stony Plain man arrested in Florida for molestation of 9-year-old boy

A 47-year-old man from Stony Plain, west of Edmonton, has been charged with child molestation in Florida near the end of 2025.
According to court records from the Broward County Clerk’s Office, police in Fort Lauderdale, north of Miami, were called to a hotel near the beach on Dec. 29.
A statement from the responding officer says a 9-year-old boy was with his family outside of the hotel when he was approached by an unknown man who allegedly touched him sexually on his chest and private areas.
The officer says the suspect followed the boy and approached from behind to allegedly sexually touch him again in the chest area and private areas.
Several witnesses saw the incident, according to the officer. One witness reportedly became “irate and confronted” the suspect before he fled and locked himself in a room.
Curtis Elliot Smith was arrested and charged with lewd and lascivious molestation of a victim under 12 years old. The crime is a felony and can carry a life sentence if found guilty.
Smith was placed in a Broward County Sheriff’s jail, where he is being held under no bond. His next court appearance has not been scheduled as of Tuesday evening.
