Members of the Health Sciences Association of Alberta (HSAA) have voted to accept a new collective agreement with the provincial government, concluding nearly two years of negotiations.
The union, which represents about 22,000 healthcare professionals including paramedics, pharmacists, and social workers, approved the deal with support from 66.8 per cent of voters.
Roughly three-quarters of eligible members participated in the ballot.
The agreement with Alberta Health Services (AHS) provides a 12 per cent wage increase over four years for all members, along with additional sector-specific adjustments. It follows the rejection of an earlier tentative deal in September.
“This agreement is a step forward for Alberta’s health-care professionals who work long hours under incredible pressure to care for others,” said HSAA President Mike Parker in a statement.
“While we didn’t get everything we wanted, this new collective agreement is a step forward for retaining the vital health-care professionals we have today, attracting the next generation for tomorrow, and making sure they all have the support they need to continue delivering high-quality care to all Albertans.”
A strike by Alberta hospital workers was averted over the weekend after the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) reached a last-minute tentative agreement with AHS.
AUPE represents over 16,000 LPNs and health care aides.
