Edmonton-based clothing outlet “Track ‘N Trail” in St. Albert targeted in swarm robberies

The latest local business hit by a swarm robbery happened just two days before Christmas. Now, the owner is warning others as it was the second occurrence in just one month. Elliott Knopp reports.

You now have to knock on the door if you want to shop at Track ‘n Trail outlet, in St. Albert. This is one of the security measures the store has put into place after being targeted by a swarm robbery about a month ago, losing thousands of dollars of merchandise.

On Monday, the store was targeted once again, by a group of masked individuals threatening violence.

“I felt like they were an immediate threat to the individuals working in the store and the property,” said Adam Weinstein, who fought off a group of masked suspects.

Weinstein was at the store when he says the group of five approached and threatened physical harm. He says the situation immediately became violent.

“They didn’t come in and start grabbing stuff. They engaged my buddy by stating ‘what’s up now? What’s up now?’ with derogatory comments. That’s when I turned, engaged all five of them and chased them out of the store,” said Weinstein.

Weinstein says the group ran off in separate directions before jumping in a getaway car and fleeing the scene, St. Albert RCMP arrived shortly after.

This incident is the second occurrence for the store in just one month.

The owner says this is because big ticket Arc’teryx products are being targeted.

“It’s a brand that has really taken off, and apparently in demand,” said Bob Schlif, Owner of Track ‘n Trail.

Edmonton police first mentioned a trend of swarming robberies in early December, investigating nearly 30 cases.

With Track n Trail being the latest business hit, just two days before Christmas, owner Schilf is warning others. Sharing his stores received sketchy calls from people asking vague questions about expensive products’ availability in store, before each occurrence.

“You know, we’re not the only ones. It’s pretty common across the city, and it’s something that we have to be aware of,” said Schlif.

RCMP are investigating the robbery and attack.

Track ‘n Trail no longer carries Arc’terix products in it’s St. Albert store, only available online and fittings through advance requests.
