Alberta RCMP have laid several charges against a man after seizing $6.8 million worth of cocaine during a traffic stop last month.

Police say around 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 23, an officer stopped a pickup truck on Highway 16 near Hinton.

The officer saw several things that led him to believe the man driving the vehicle was in possession of illegal drugs.

Police detained him and brought in a police service dog, who positively identified the presence of illegal drugs.

Investigators seized 68 kilograms of cocaine and a loaded handgun during the search.

Edmonton resident Ranjit Singh Sekhon, 36, has been charged with possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, unsafe storage of a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized, possessing a prohibited weapon, possessing a firearm in a motor vehicle, and possessing a restricted weapon without registration or a license.

After court appearances, Sekhon was remanded into custody until Nov. 21.
