‘Family in India is devastated’: Friend mourns death of Edmonton student stabbed by delivery worker

Alberta Occupational Health and Safety is investigating the death of a 22-year-old man in an Edmonton parkade on Wednesday. 22-year-old Jashandeep Singh Maan was stabbed to death at approximately 12:15 p.m. on September 4.

Maan was a student and had lived in Canada for just 8 months. Family friend Bawa Ahluwalia has been in contact with Maan’s family in India.

“The family is just devastated in India.”, says Ahluwalia. “His mother is in a hospital, in the emergency, she’s had some health issues and she’s in ICU. Because of his death.”

Ahluwalia says Jashandeep – who friends call Jashan – was a good person and a very good student. He left his mother, father, and older brother in India to come to Canada to pursue his studies, working part time at a family friend’s Tim Horton’s franchise. Edmonton Police say that while Maan was attacked at work, his killer was not known to him.

“It’s sad. Doesn’t matter who’s kid it is, when something like that happens it devastates everybody.”, Ahluwalia told CityNews on Friday. “I feel so bad for his family, they’re living so far away on the other side, and they’re depending on us. Whatever we tell them, that’s where they’re on. They can’t do anything sitting in India.”

Edmonton Police have charged 40-year-old Edgar Wesker with 2nd degree murder. In a statement to CityNews, Occupational Health & Safety confirmed they are investigating the incident as a workplace fatality, saying that Maan was fatally injured by a worker from a delivery company.

According to Ahluwalia, Maan’s family has requested that his body be sent to them in India, where he will be laid to rest.
