Wasp infestation in Edmonton causing resident to set DIY traps

You can’t eat a meal outside right now without having unwanted guests in the form of annoying wasps joining you. CityNews spoke to Audric Moses, who has found one way to deal with the infestation. 

“It was just too much like I thought it was dangerous,” said Moses when he saw a swarm of wasps last week saying it was worse compared to last summer which led them to set a trap in their backyard.

“We couldn’t even come out to do any yard work like we have the big garden.”

He is not the only one getting these annoying little pests, as his neighbour comes to his door and asks for help as well.

“Probably over just a week ago, came to me and asked me if I could look around the yard and see if I could figure out where all these wasps were coming from because his family and his neighbours on the other side had been stung. And one of their kid I think got swarmed,” he explained. 

Moses set multiple traps in their backyard, saying he exterminated around 400 wasps on that week.

“This is kind of a secondary trap that we threw just to catch them. I actually think the nest is underneath there, once the weather gets cold. We’ll try to maybe clear it out if possible,” he explained.

Some of his traps were filled with some household items like vinegar, apple cider, and sugar, making wasps attracted to the scent. Despite the trap working well in their yard, one pest control says it is still better to call a professional.

“People say sometimes it works, but in reality, it’s approximately five percent of the strength of the poison that we use. So most of the time it will end up in failure,” explained Dul Elassadi, with We Clean Pest Control.

Elassadi says that they are getting more than 300 calls per month to deal with the wasps’ infestation, which is more than compared to last year and one of the reasons is the weather.

“Because last winter was short winter and going through that it created a lot of more smaller insects that the wasps can feed on and for those reasons, the wasps will increase.” 

But with Fall is right around the corner, Moses is looking forward to seeing the little devils fly away.

“Once the cold weather comes I’m looking forward to them being completely gone.”
