Mill Creek outdoor pool reopens with a splash after 4 years

Edmonton’s Mill Creek outdoor pool will officially reopen on Monday, but families got a chance to jump in a few days early.

“I think it’s really great,” one kid told CityNews Friday. “I think it’s a lot of fun, and I think it’s one of the best pools I’ve been to.”

The pool is reopening with improved accessibility (zero-depth entry), a water slide, inclusive change rooms and washrooms, and new signage.

“It’s a little bigger and more spacious,” a mother said.

The pool will offer deep water aquafit classes, registered learn-to-swim programs and public swim.

“These are accessible, affordable amenities, and low-income Edmontonians don’t have to pay any fees to access these facilities. So it also adds to the affordability,” said Mayor Amarjeet Sohi.

The outdoor pool in Mill Creek Ravine, which first opened in 1953, was closed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Rehabilitation and maintenance began in August 2022.

“We know that Edmontonians love spending as much time as possible outdoors during our beautiful summer months,” said Coun. Michael Janz in a news release. “There’s no better way to cool down on a hot summer day than at one of our outdoor pools with your family and friends.”

Other work done on the pool: the installation of anti-entrapment drains; and upgrading or replacing the filtration, disinfection, mechanical and electrical systems.

There are five city-run outdoor pools in Edmonton: Borden Natural Swimming Pool, Mill Creek, Queen Elizabeth, Fred Broadstock and Wîhkwêntôwin.

The city has extended access for all outdoor pools, with the last day to take dip at the end of September.
