Fire crews battle pair of blazes at under-construction homes

Edmonton fire crews responded to two fires at newly-built, under construction homes on Sunday and Monday. Both fires remain under investigation.

Edmonton Fire Rescue Services says crews have been called to a pair of homes that were under construction to battle blazes over the last two days.

Around 5:53 a.m. on Sunday, five fire crews were dispatched to Alwood Bend after receiving a report that a house that was under construction caught fire.

By 6:08 a.m. a second alarm was called, and an additional five crews responded.

EFRS says around 6:56 a.m., the fire was ruled under control, and it was fully extinguished at 4:09 p.m.

No injuries were reported, and damage was contained to the construction site. EFRS says the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Fire crews also responded to 98 Avenue and 225 A Street around 4:03 a.m. on Monday.

Within six minutes, seven crews were on scene. By 5:06 a.m. the fire was ruled under control.

“[We] kept it to the structure of origin and it took quite a while to put it out,” said EFRS in a statement. “The whole house fell in on itself so basically that’s all we’re trying to get to now.”

EFRS says no injuries have been reported. They also noted that home was under construction and the fire did melt siding on a neighbouring home.

“It was very hot so it damaged I believe nine homes in the vicinity it’s all under investigation right now.  We couldn’t finish a primary search so we brought in heavy equipment to be able to finish that search as well as put out a hot spot in the basement.”
