It happened at Terwillegar dog park, a discovery among the rocks at the beach turned out to be prehistoric.
A social media user posting a letter they received from the Royal Tyrrell Museum after finding the bone at the dog park. The letter saying although it is hard to identify it could be from a Hadrosaur.
Finding a fossil while taking your dog for a walk might seem kinda crazy, but paleontologists at the University of Alberta says a lot of major fossil finds are from everyday people.
“If there’s one thing you can do for paleontology, it’s keep walking your dogs, so many of these finds are come across that way,” said Gavin Bradley, assistant lecturer of Earth and atmospheric sciences.
Researchers reminding people they can move a fossil if it’s on the surface but are not allowed to dig for it.
“If it’s on crown land or public land, and you’ve surfaced collected the fossil. You can keep it as the custodian of that fossil,” said Bradley. “So you don’t have ownership in the way that you can sell it, but you are keeping it as a custodian for the Province of Alberta.”
The surprise dinosaur bone was also a surprise to pet lovers walking their dog in the same park where the fossil was found.
“I think it’s a great thing for anyone in that area to have that kind of find, because it’s a great scientific adventure and plus for Edmonton,” said one Edmontonian CityNews spoke to.
