Edmonton police issue nearly 1,600 traffic tickets, more than previous month

Nearly 1,600 traffic tickets were issued in the latest Operation 24-hours, which sees members of the Edmonton Police Service increase traffic enforcement for a day.
The 24-hour operation took place on Oct. 13, and 1,378 speeding tickets were issued by EPS, which is up from the previous operation roughly a month ago.
Police say 107 tickets were handed out for non-hazardous equipment or document violations, 24 fines were issued for hazardous moving violations, 17 distracted driving fines were handed out, and another five criminal code violations, which include driving while impaired or driving while disqualified.

Some of the more notable incidents include one man who was stopped for speeding and distracted driving. Officers learned the man was driving with a suspended licence and was also wanted for breach of conditions and four outstanding warrants.
At the same time, officers discovered the driver was also in possession of bags of methamphetamine, a replica firearm, and an extendable baton. They also determined the man was driving under the impairment of drugs.
Police arrested and charged him with possession of a controlled substance, breach of weapons prohibition, possession of a weapon, and impaired driving, among other charges.
