Man fatally stabbed outside bar in Banff in 2nd homicide this summer; suspect from B.C. charged

By News Staff

Police say a 27-year-old man was stabbed to death following an altercation outside a bar in Banff early Saturday morning.

Banff RCMP say they received a 9-1-1 call around 12:09 a.m. that a man was stabbed on Banff Avenue.

Police say the victim, from Foothills County, was taken to hospital where he was declared deceased.

Two men were taken into custody at a nearby location.

A 20-year-old from Lake Country, B.C., was charged with second-degree murder.

The second suspect was released without charges after police determined he was not directly involved.

Alberta RCMP’s major crimes unit is investigating. Investigators are hoping to speak to witnesses, or anyone with information about the altercation.

No immediate danger to community: RCMP

It’s the second homicide in Banff this summer – the first two homicides in the tourist community in more than 30 years. RCMP specified the two homicides are not related.

Mounties also acknowledged the public’s concern given the two homicides, but assured there is no threat to the security of the general public in Banff – both residents and visitors.

“Our officers are committed to your safety and protecting our community,” Staff Sgt. Buxton-Carr, the Banff detachment commander, said in a statement. “Banff RCMP actively patrol the downtown core, including the pedestrian zone, every night to provide a visible deterrent to crime and are available at all times to respond to calls from the public for assistance.”
