Public washrooms will pop up around Edmonton for the summer

Ever have the need to go while you’re out and about but can never find a toilet? Starting shortly that won’t be an issue as the City announced that high traffic areas, including parks, business districts and areas hosting outdoor events will be seeing new mobile public washrooms.

“In anticipation of increased outdoor activities during the summer months of 2022, we are providing mobile washroom facilities around the city,” said Nicole Fraser, General Supervisor, Operations Planning and Monitoring in a statement. “These mobile washroom trailers offer increased and equitable access to safe and clean washroom facilities for residents and visitors to our beautiful city.”

The public washrooms will be installed starting this week and will be available between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. until Oct. 31.

The City added extended hours will be implemented for certain washrooms during special events and the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Edmonton Transit is also expected to open ten of 18 washrooms on Tuesday, following a temporary closure, as the City looked into a three-year Transit Safety Plan.

“ETS has been working on improving washroom safety to allow for safer use by the public and for staff who monitor and maintain these washrooms. By taking a phased approach to reopening the washrooms, it provides us an opportunity to test new measures, monitor, and refine as we go,” said Trevor Dennehy, Director of LRT Operations and Maintenance. “We want to open them in a way that is right and safe for everyone involved.”

The transit washrooms that will be opened are; Northgate, South Campus, Kingsway, Castle Downs, Meadows, Lewis Farms, Heritage Valley, Clareview, Southgate and Central.
