Canadians opening wallets to support Ukraine amid Russian invasion

Canadians are opening their wallets to show support for Ukraine amid the Russian invasion, but observers say it pays to do a bit of homework before donating.
Charity industry experts say Canadians have a variety of options of where to give, from registered charities and nonprofits to crowdfunding for grassroots projects and individual families.
Bruce MacDonald, president and CEO of Imagine Canada, says the crisis is bringing out the generosity of Canadians, but a little research will help them pick a charity that aligns with their passions and ensure their “trust barometer” feels good.

He says multiple organizations have launched emergency relief efforts for Ukraine and a website like canadahelps.org, which connects charities and donors, can help them find one that fits their interests.
The federal government announced Friday it would match individual donations to the Canadian Red Cross up to $10 million to help bring humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds and his wife Blake Lively committed to matching donations to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees up to $1 million.
