Premier to provide update on Phase 2 of relaunch

EDMONTON (660 NEWS) – We could learn more about when the next phase of Alberta’s relaunch strategy will be.

Premier Jason Kenney will provide an update on Phase 2 of the relaunch at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The province previously said the target date for the second phase was June 19 but the exact date has not been confirmed.

On Monday, members of the Emergency Management Committee met to discuss the second phase, and in the last two weeks Kenney noted that it was possible that it could begin earlier than anticipated.

Phase 1 of Alberta’s relaunch started last month with many cities and towns opening bars, restaurants and hair salons on May 14. However, Calgary and Brooks had to wait until May 25 due to a high number of active cases.

Phase 2 would include the potential reopening of K-12 schools, libraries, movie theatres and more personal services, with some restrictions.

However, nightclubs, gyms, pools, recreation centres and arenas would remain closed and large events such as festivals and concerts will be prohibited.

Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer said she’s been encouraged by the low number of cases reported since businesses started reopening.

As of Monday afternoon, Alberta has 355 active cases of COVID-19 with nearly 7,000 recoveries reported.
