South Edmonton community rallies as Hazeldean Bakery reopens with new owners

Former and current owners teamed up to mark Hazeldean Bakery’s unofficial reopening by giving away free baked goods. Alyssa Conti reports.

Hundreds of customers turned out Tuesday as a beloved Edmonton bakery reopened for business.

Hazeldean Bakery opened its doors again with new owners after the previous owner for 16 years, Lucy Lu retired last year.

“It’s great to be open, the community’s been waiting and we’ve been waiting, but we’re open now and it’s fantastic,” said Luke Wood, the new owner.

Wood moved from Yellowknife to tackle the shop’s revival with a friend in the baking industry.

Lu, meanwhile, also crossed provincial borders to support the reopening, saying she has been enjoying retirement in British Columbia. “Very, very relaxed,” Lu said. “I have the time to learn how to plant flowers in the garden.”

On Tuesday, several members in the community showed up to greet the new owners — and secure some free goodies — just as they had come out to say Lu goodbye last December when she retired.

Tove Hannell, who moved into the neighbourhood from Sweden, says she was pleased to see the bakery open.

“We’ve been glancing at this place and wondering ‘when is it gonna open?’ so I’m very happy today,” Hannell said.

Colin Kot, was one of the bakery’s regular customers returned to see Lu ran the shop for a third of its 50-year lifespan.

“The product is good, it’s affordable, and Lucy’s just an all-around nice person,” Kot said. “This is something needed in the community. I mean, you don’t get better baked goods than Lucy’s bakery.”

Lu herself will only be in the city for a couple more days this week to help train her successors, who say they will take her guidance for at least a month before cooking up their own ideas.

“Hopefully it works out,” Wood said. “The community has been very supportive, so I’m pretty sure it will.”
