Despite a large majority of Albertans voting in favour of remaining in Canada during Monday’s province-wide referendum, separatists say the drive for independence continues.

CityNews took in a watch party by the group Let Alberta Decide Monday night.

Co-chair Keith Wilson said, “(this) concludes a campaign. But the conversation about Alberta’s future in Canada and our place in Canada and our role in Canada will continue. This has been a very important discussion. To me, I’m optimistic.”

Jeffrey Rath of the pro-independence Alberta Prosperity Project says the fight is not over.

Rath says his movement dominated the conversation in the last year and they have shown Albertans the benefits of independence.

“We have, y’know, very committed Albertans who understand the math of Alberta independence and understand how much better off we’re going to be as an independent country and those of us committed to this are going to continue working forward that’s all there is to it.”

Supporters of independence such as Donny Bonnar say the movement is just getting started.

“We spent too much time sitting back taking it and being the cash cow for Canada and we’re not going to take it anymore. So the more we stand up, the more we have this conversation, and the more intense the conversation gets, the better off, hopefully, we come out of it.”

The referendum saw over two dozen third-party advertisers participate.
