Police intercept drugs packaged inside plastic Kinder eggs destined for Edmonton Institution

Police say two men and two women have been charged in connection with two separate investigations into drug trafficking at the Edmonton Institution last year.

First investigation

The Edmonton Police Service says staff at the correctional facility discovered – on Feb. 20, 2025 – concealed drugs and other contraband inside electronic items that had been mailed to an inmate.

Police say they seized 93 grams of methamphetamine and 46 grams of cannabis resin, as well as nicotine patches, two miniature cell phones, seven USB drives and an SD card.

Authorities say a lengthy investigation involved surveillance video and shipping and payment records. Investigators allege the sender used another person’s name and address on the shipping label.

A year after the items were found, a 44-year-old St. Albert woman was arrested and charged with trafficking a controlled substance, delivering contraband to an inmate and identity fraud.

Second investigation

Edmonton police say Correctional Service Canada discovered, in May 2025, a plan to introduce drugs and other contraband into the Edmonton Institution.

Investigators say two suspects had made an agreement with an inmate to traffic drugs using drones.

On May 7, 2025, authorities say two suspects arrived at the Edmonton Institution in a rental vehicle. Police searched the vehicle and seized 328 grams of meth, 180 grams of cannabis resin packaged in plastic Kinder eggs, two drones, cellular phones and related equipment.

A 31-year-old inmate of the Institution was charged with conspiracy to commit possession for the purpose of trafficking and party to the offence of possession for the purpose of trafficking.
