Edmonton’s Mill Woods gets e-scooters, e-bikes as part of pilot project

After long being left without two-wheeled transportation, Edmonton’s Mill Woods neighbourhood is getting shared e-scooters and e-bikes.
It’s part of a pilot project that’s also looking into safety and parking issues.
“Mill Woods was selected for the pilot because there was strong community interest and because it gives us a great opportunity to test new operating requirements,” said Jordana Kulchar, the city’s general supervisor of planning and permitting.
Users will need to abide by designated riding areas – on Mill Woods Road or within 50 metres of shared-use pathways and bike lanes.
“These designated riding areas encourage users to travel along Active Transportation corridors while discouraging illegal sidewalk riding and keeping riders a safe distance from motor vehicles,” the City of Edmonton said in a news release.
Riders will also be required to park in designated spots that don’t obstruct pathways or infrastructure.
“Most corrals will be within 200 metres of each other and approximately 500 metres from residential areas,” the city explained.
“Device screens and mobile apps will notify riders if they attempt to end a trip outside a designated parking area. Riders who abandon a device without ending their trip properly will continue to incur per-minute charges as a penalty fee.”
The City of Edmonton’s shared micromobility program expanded its boundary to Mill Woods in the summer of 2024, but the companies offering e-bikes and e-scooters for rent did not expand there.
Bird and Lime are the city’s two approved vendors.
