No prob-llama for Edmonton firefighters after animal gets stuck in sinkhole

Edmonton’s firefighters are trained for the unexpected. Rescuing a llama from a sinkhole certainly qualifies.

Fire crews were called to the llama drama on Saturday morning after the woolly camelid fell into a three-metre-deep sinkhole.

Edmonton Fire Rescue Services (EFRS) says the opening was too small for the llama, named Runner, to be pulled out safely.

“Our team worked quickly to pivot,” EFRS explained in a Facebook post. “They coordinated a mini excavator, checked with utilities to make sure digging was safe, and called in our specialized Technical Rescue Team.

“Once the excavator safely dug out enough room, the firefighters and Technical Rescue Team used specialized rescue slings to lift Runner back to solid ground.”

Firefighters described the operation as “a total success,” with Runner walking away from the situation uninjured.
