Attempted traffic stop leads to multiple collisions in Edmonton, ASIRT investigating

Alberta’s Police watchdog has taken over the investigation into a collision involving an EPS police cruiser that resulted in serious injuries.

Edmonton police say the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating a pair of collisions that occurred after an attempted traffic stop.

EPS says just before 11 p.m. on May 21, officers reportedly noticed a vehicle being driven in a dangerous manner around 137 Avenue and 66 Street.

Officers then tried to conduct a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled at high speeds. Due to this, the officers did not pursue the vehicle.

While the vehicle was near 118 Avenue, the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, drove through a parking lot, and hit a brick wall and a garbage bin.

When officers arrived at the scene, the driver initially refused to exit the vehicle, but was eventually taken into custody and has been charged with criminal flight and dangerous driving.

While this was happening, another marked EPS vehicle was responding to the scene with lights and sirens when it was involved in a collision with another vehicle at the intersection of 118 Avenue and Wayne Gretzky Drive.

The woman who was driving the other vehicle was taken to hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries, while the EPS officer was treated for minor injuries.

Due to the nature of both incidents, Alberta’s police watchdog — ASIRT — was informed and has begun an investigation.
