Alberta aims to reduce classroom sizes through new grant

The Government of Alberta says it will be investing $200 million into schools within the province through a new grant.

The Class Size Reduction Grant aims to hire over 1,400 new K-9 teachers in an effort to improve classroom learning conditions and help reduce class sizes.

“Over the past year, we have been taking real action to support Alberta classrooms by hiring more teachers, adding more educational supports and creating more student spaces across the province. This investment reflects our government’s continued focus on supporting strong classrooms, teachers, and students,” said Premier Danielle Smith in a statement.

The province says the new grant comes as nearly 90,000 students joined Alberta’s classrooms over the last four years.

“Smaller class sizes make a real difference for students and teachers, especially in the early and middle grades. This targeted investment helps ensure classrooms are safer, more manageable and focused on student success,” said Demetrios Nicolaides, Minister of Education and Childcare.

The province adds that this step is part of a multi-year commitment to address class size and complexity and support teachers as classrooms continue to evolve across the province.
