Prescribed burn at Edmonton’s Jan Reimer Park rescheduled for Friday

A prescribed burn at Edmonton’s Jan Reimer Park that was cancelled earlier this week due to high winds has been rescheduled for Friday.

Friday’s planned burn across 19 hectares of grassland – a wildfire prevention operation – is also dependent on weather conditions of the day.

Nearby trails and the Terwillegar Park Footbridge will be closed.

City officials warn smoke will be visible from mid-morning to late afternoon.

“The prescribed burn is part of the city’s wildfire prevention effort to proactively reduce wildfire risk,” the City of Edmonton wrote in a news release. “Prescribed burns reduce wildfire fuel, help prevent high-intensity fires, return important nutrients to the ecosystem and increase biodiversity that supports habitat enhancement.”
