A man accused of stealing a 74-year-old’s taxi and running over him in a town north of Edmonton is now facing manslaughter charges, Mounties say.

It happened at a Petro-Canada on 78 Street in Peace River at around 2:30 a.m. on April 23.

RCMP received a call about two hours after it happened, when someone found the victim, 74-year-old Hashi Guled, near the station pumps.

Security footage shows the suspect entering a red 2005 Dodge Caravan taxi, getting behind the wheel, and then driving over the victim before fleeing, according to investigators.

The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit have arrested 37-year-old Daniel Michael Campion and charged him with manslaughter, criminal negligence causing death, and dangerous driving causing death.

Campion is expected to appear in court on May 25.

“We received a great deal of helpful tips from the public during this investigation,” said RCMP Staff Sgt. Tyrone Brand. “With community support, we were able to quickly identify and arrest the suspect in this tragic death.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Peace River RCMP at 780-624-6611. Those who wish to remain anonymous can reach CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
