A home in a close Edmonton neighbourhood is now lost after a fire and long fight Friday night. As James Dunn reports, neighbours say the owners were on vacation when it happened.

A firefighter was injured while responding to a fire that destroyed a home in Edmonton’s Cumberland neighbourhood Friday.

Edmonton Fire Rescue Service (EFRS) received a 911 call about a fire in a house at 6:43 p.m. Friday on Calderon Crescent Street.

Fire crews arrived on the scene to find the house engulfed in flames. One person was evacuated from the building, whose owners are reportedly on vacation, according to EFRS.

Neighbour Lisa Lorieau said, “The whole thing was just flames and smoke. I called 911 right away. It was very scary, nothing like this has ever happened in this neighbourhood.”

Firefighters brought the fire under control in two hours but continued working to put out the fire entirely.

The home is considered a total loss, according to EFRS. A neighbouring home also sustained slight damage.

One of the firefighters was injured during the operation. Details of the injury were unavailable.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
